If you work in a college, you have probably heard the term SEC in every curriculum meeting since NEP 2020 arrived. But what exactly is a Skill Enhancement Course, how many credits does it carry, and how is it different from other courses in the undergraduate scheme? This guide answers those questions in plain language, using the UGC’s own framework as the source.

What is a Skill Enhancement Course (SEC)?

SEC stands for Skill Enhancement Course. In the UGC’s Curriculum and Credit Framework for Undergraduate Programmes (CCFUP), these are courses aimed at giving students practical skills, hands-on training and soft skills that improve their employability.

In other words, an SEC is not another theory paper. It is meant to leave the student able to do something — prepare a business document, analyse a dataset, plan a digital campaign, use AI tools responsibly.

How many credits are SECs worth?

The UGC framework lists a minimum of 9 credits for Skill Enhancement Courses, for both three-year and four-year undergraduate programmes. Universities then place these credits into their own scheme of studies, so the semester in which your students take an SEC, and how the credits are split, depends on your affiliating university.

Always check your university’s current scheme before planning. This guide explains the national framework; the scheme your college follows is the one that counts.

SEC, VAC and AEC — what is the difference?

The framework groups undergraduate courses into categories. Three of them are often confused:

  • Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC): practical skills and hands-on training for employability. Minimum 9 credits.
  • Value Added Courses (VAC): courses common to all undergraduate students, such as Understanding India, environmental education, digital and technological solutions, and health and wellness. The framework lists 6 to 8 credits.
  • Ability Enhancement Courses (AEC): language and communication skills, in a modern Indian language and in English. The framework lists 8 credits.

A quick way to remember: AEC builds language, VAC builds values and awareness, SEC builds job-ready skills.

How many hours is one credit?

Credits decide your timetable, so it helps to know how the UGC defines them. In the framework, one credit of lecture or tutorial means one hour of engagement a week over a 15-week semester — about 15 hours. One credit of practicum means two hours a week — about 30 hours.

Here is a simple example. A three-credit lecture course works out to 45 hours in a semester. A two-credit practicum course works out to 60 hours. Because skill courses are usually hands-on, many of them mix lecture and practicum hours. When you compare course options, ask each provider for the hours split, not just the credit count.

Examples of skill courses colleges choose

Colleges usually choose topics based on their students and local employers, within what their university’s scheme allows. Popular areas include:

  • Digital marketing and social media
  • Data analytics using Excel and dashboards
  • Office automation, business writing and presentations
  • Artificial intelligence tools for everyday work
  • Soft skills, communication and interview readiness
  • Freelancing and entrepreneurship basics

You can see how such courses are written in module and credit format on our courses page. One example is AI Unlocked — Data & AI for Fresh Graduates, designed for Arts, Commerce and BBA students with no coding background.

How should a college choose an SEC?

Start with your students: what will help a BA, B.Com. or BBA graduate get a first job or start freelancing? Then check that the syllabus fits your university’s scheme and that your teachers are ready to run it. We have put the full evaluation into a 7-point checklist for choosing a skill course — it is a useful document to bring to your next Board of Studies or IQAC meeting.

Where to read the official framework

Do not rely on summaries alone — including this one. The full text is in the UGC’s Curriculum and Credit Framework for Undergraduate Programmes, where the SEC definition is in section 5.1.5 and the credit table is in section 5. Conclusion

A Skill Enhancement Course is the part of the UGC undergraduate framework that turns classroom learning into job-ready skill: practical, hands-on and tied to employability, with a minimum of 9 credits in the framework. Once you know how credits convert to hours, and how an SEC differs from a VAC or an AEC, planning becomes much easier and your Board of Studies can decide faster.

Check your university’s scheme first, shortlist courses that come with a clear module, credit and hours structure, and involve your faculty early.
